Quirky Campers New Zealand was born from a love of adventure, craftsmanship, and the freedom of the open road. Originally set up by Leanne and Dan, who brought Quirky Campers across the globe from the UK, the New Zealand branch quickly became a hub for handcrafted, one-of-a-kind campervans for hire. These beautiful vans, each with its own unique story, have since provided countless travellers with unforgettable adventures across Aotearoa.

In 2024, the Quirky Campers NZ mantel was passed on to Simon—an avid traveller, (pretty average) surfer, and artist who has long enjoyed nothing better than escaping in a camper for adventurous roadies and surf epics. For Simon, campervanning offers spontaneity, off-grid adventures, and chasing the promise of perfect waves up and down New Zealand’s incredible coastline, often accompanied by his loyal four-legged co-pilot, Kora.

Simon’s love for creativity and craftsmanship runs deep. Having restored a 1973 VW Kombi, he understands the heart and soul that goes into creating a truly special camper. He’s also the current owner of Vallery, the world’s original “van art gallery,” curated for the Aotearoa Arts Trail (and available to hire through Quirky!). As an artist himself, Simon brings a deep appreciation for individuality and custom design—values that align perfectly with Quirky Campers’ ethos.

Under Simon’s guidance, Quirky Campers NZ continues to champion the same principles that made it special from the beginning: celebrating the joy of slow travel, supporting small ethical businesses, and offering a platform for van owners to share their incredible creations with the world. Every Quirky Camper is unique, packed with personality, and equipped to give you a fantastic off-grid experience.

Quirky Campers is a family business that was originally started in the UK by husband and wife team David and Lindsay. They set it up in 2010 as a means to rent their own gorgeous campervan, Bella, while they volunteered in Kenya for six months. Running the rentals from Africa, they were amazed at how much interest the lovely Bella got.

On their return they slowly started to build the business alongside self-building their own family home in Bristol… cut to today and there are over 250 Quirky vans on the UK roads!

Contributing to our smaller communities

Campervanning around NZ allows you to explore places you might miss if you’d just booked into hotels in our biggest cities like Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch and Queenstown. Our hidden gems are everywhere in between! And with them come the opportunities to stop off in the smaller towns to buy a coffee and a pie, a crafty souvenir, fresh produce from the roadside or a hearty meal from the local pub. We love to spread the tourism dollar far and wide!

Holidays at home – for our lovely locals!

With such a beautiful country to explore, there’s no need to leave! Holidays don’t need to be stressful, logistical nightmares involving 100ml toiletry planning, days of travel and two-day jetlag. Our quirky campers are here to help you discover the joy, delight and (if you want it) wild adventure of a holiday in Aotearoa New Zealand. Our vans may not be no-carbon, but compared to a long haul flight they’re practically saintly.

Doing the right thing

For us, good business means looking after our people, our communities and our planet. Our van fit-outs try to make use of natural and reclaimed materials and most have solar panels to sustain themselves. We encourage our hirers to make the Tiaki Promise and look after our beautiful Aotearoa. We also give 10% of our profits to charity and invest in carbon offsetting projects.
