Marrying practicality and prettiness, Christchurch-based Dorothy is an incredible choice for your next roadie. With her effortless layout and Scandi-inspired high-spec finish, she really is #vanlifegoals.
Stepping inside, you're greeted by Dorothy’s bespoke interior, which pairs soothing neutral tones with bright, patterned accents that create a fresh and funky living space. Her wooden mosaic swivel table is a beautiful centrepiece, perfect for enjoying meals or games with your whānau. And the matching backsplash tiles and plywood handles add a touch of quirky sophistication.
But Dorothy is more than just a pretty face! Amazingly, her entire seating section doubles as storage, so maintaining her tidy look is as easy as one two three. Just lift up the cushions, pop in your gear, and put the cushion back on again. Making the bed is a breeze too- simply push the backrest cushions into the centre and lay down the sheets.
When it’s time to relax, Dorothy’s designed so you can pick your view. Chill on the bed, under the awning, or pull up a couple of chairs by the boot and enjoy a plate of treats on her handy pull-out table. Want a bit more room? Attach the awning tent and triple your available floor space!
What's not to love? Whether you're planning a city escape or a cross-country roadie, Dorothy’s your girl.

Note: Dorothy is suitable for freedom camping as she has been upgraded to meet the new regulations (requiring a fixed toilet). Please scroll to the top of this page and click the link in the yellow banner to find out more about freedom camping and self-contained vehicles.

In The Cab: 3 seats in cab up front (2 with 3-point seat belts ad one with a lap-belt) and a radio/MP3 player with aux/iPhone input.

Kitchen Area: The interior height is 1.3m and Dorothy has a fully equipped kitchen complete with two single-burner hobs (one in a slide out unit and one spare), a generous fridge with a freezer compartment and gorgeous counter-top sink. Plates, bowls, cutlery, glasses, mugs, wine glasses, utensils, pot and fry pan, mixing bowls and kettle are all included as well as an array of spices, coffee, tea, oil, salt and pepper. Dorothy also comes with coasters and food storage containers.

Living/Sleeping Area: Dorothy has bench seating on both sides that convert to bed that is king size in width, but it is a little shorter than a standard double (150cm x 165cm). However, if you have one taller person you can add the extension to make the bed is 190cm long on one side. The bed has a thick memory foam mattress for a great night’s sleep. Note: we list bedding and towels as Extras at the booking stage in case guests prefer to bring their own. There are thick black-out curtains for warmth and privacy. Plentiful storage areas can be found under the bench seating and Dorothy also comes with books games to keep you entertained whatever the weather!

Water Facilities: Like all Quirky Campers in NZ, Dorothy is certified self-contained. She has a 25 litre fresh and grey water tanks and an electric pump and tap and sink in the kitchen area. Dorothy also has a 12V powered outdoor shower gadget! The fixed toilet is stored under the bench seat/bed which can be pulled out on rails for use.

Electrical/Lighting and Audio Equipment: Dorothy has a solar panel on her roof (as well as engine charging) which feeds the leisure battery inside to power the lights, fridge, roof vent fan, water pump and USB sockets so you can be entirely self-sufficient.

Type of Heating: Insulated but no other heating aside from cab heater.

Outside: Dorothy has a pull-out table from the rear sheltered by the raised door and a side-mounted  awning. Outside chairs, table and an awning tent (which provides all-important standing room and triples your floor space!) are available as an optional extras.

Conversion Story: This van was the labour of love of talented couple Leandro and Noémie, backpackers who met and fell in love in Auckland on their travels and ended up staying in NZ for 8 years! They married, set-up a woodworking business together, had a baby and in 2022 built the van we later went on to buy. Everyone loves their story and skills - which show in the exquisite finishes and thoughtful details so when they decided to move overseas the van was snapped up by Barb -seen in the photos and video tour - and was named as a tribute to her mother. Subsequently we were thrilled to purchase the van and continue Dorothy's legacy… we hope you make some amazing memories on your travels – Steve & Kaylene

We rented Dorothy for a 2 week road trip around the South Island and we couldn’t recommend her any more! Her owners Steve and Kaylene made sure Dorothy had absolutely everything we needed to be self contained on the road from cooking utensils to camp chairs to ample charging units for all our devices. The van is solar powered so doesn’t need to be plugged in which meant we could freedom camp/use unpowered sites wherever we went. The moveable hot plate is particularly handy as it means you can cook outside or in the kitchen facilities of the campsites. The pickup and drop off is conveniently located close to the airport and Steve made the handover process quick and simple so we could get on the road. If you are looking for a van for a NZ road trip Dorothy is the perfect option :) Thanks again to Steve + Kaylene!
