Billy is currently being converted so we can’t share photos of his completed fit-out quite yet. He’s expected to be finished by the beginning of December when all will be revealed! There are just a few external shots and a layout plan for now. However, we can tell you that he’s got some serious height and space – and (when extended) an enormous bed! He’ll have a natural laid-back vibe with a gorgeous, slatted timber ceiling, brass sink and tap and blush pink tiles. A hippy with class! :D

We appreciate that it’s hard to know what you’re getting without all the photos… you’ll have to trust us! We wanted to get Billy listed because demand is growing fast for the peak season, so this allows people to secure him for a summer roadie!

Note: Billy has been built with a fixed toilet and therefore IS suitable for freedom camping despite the law change in June 2023 regarding self-containment certification. Please scroll to the top of this page and click the link in the yellow banner to find out more about freedom camping and self-contained vehicles.

Note: Billy has a minimum 4 day hire for most of the year and 7 days during the summer.

About the Campervan

Location: Billy lives in Ohoka, north of Christchurch approx. 20km (20 mins drive) from both Christchurch airport and the CBD. If you’re driving your own car, it can be safely parked off-road while you’re away.

In The Cab: 3 seats in cab up front with a radio and audio/bluetooth connection.

Kitchen Area: Lovely timber countertops and generous sink with electric pump tap. There’s a 65L upright fridge and for cooking, there’s an in-built 2-burner gas stove. Billy also comes with all the essential utensils, pots, pans, knives, crockery and cutlery etc. For safety there’s gas monitor, fire alarm and fire extinguisher.

Dining/Living/Sleeping Area: Billy has an internal height of 1.99m – so standing room for virtually everyone! There’s comfy bench seating for two (plus an extra stool for a third traveller) to sit at the dining table. There’s a fixed bed across the back of the van (1.43m wide x 1.73m long) which is slightly shorter than standard… but you can extend the bed and sleep the other way in a huge 1.73m x 1.99m bed! If you’re travelling with a child, you can also make up the single which utilises the bench seating and dining table to create a bed that measures 550mm x 1720mm. And with the luxury foam mattress pieces all round, a good nights’ sleep is practically guaranteed! Note: with the single made up it’s not possible to use the double bed in extended form. Billy is insulated with beautiful thick curtains and for ultimate comfort and he has a ceiling fan for extra ventilation. Note: we list bedding and towels as Extras at the booking stage in case guests prefer to bring their own. There is also plenty of storage space over the cab and under the bench seats and bed.

Water Facilities: Like all Quirky Campers in NZ, Billy is certified self-contained. There’s a fixed 40 litre fresh water tank with external filler and a similar sized grey water tank (also fixed) with waste attachment and hose to empty waste. The fixed toilet is stored under the bench seating, accessed from inside the van and can be pulled out for use as needed.

Electrical/Lighting and Audio Equipment: Billy has a leisure battery charged via the engine when driving, LED lights with USB sockets and a 500W inverter for charging small devices. He also has a 240v hook-up and campground power cable.

Type of Heating: Insulated but no other heating besides cab heater. But Billy’s owners are planning to fit a diesel heater in time for the cooler months in 2025.

Outside: Billy has optional extras including camping chairs, an outdoor table and a portable gas cooker for alfresco cooking.

Conversion Story: Billy is our third van in the Quirky family and this time, following feedback from last season, we went bigger! He’s named Billy after Andy’s dog and he’s got lots of height and space. We wanted a mixture of a natural look and a happy, hippy feel with classic class. The timber joinery and ceiling, as well as the fixed bed and generous storage are our favourite features. He’s also got power when driving. We hope you enjoy Billy – we think he’s pretty cool! – Brenda & Andy

It was possible to book even 3 days in advance and the whole organisation went really smooth. The Van was super comfortable and we liked the layout a lot! Enough space for bags and so cozy. Thanks a lot
