Please note I have made changes since the video (see below).
If you’re wanting a high end van with all the trimmings then look no further. This van would be perfect for anyone wanting to get away for a couple of day, a week or 2 or even move in full time. Its equipped for every possible need: Space for storage of sports gear of every kind (I know because this is me!), a heater to warm the toes while your damp clothes and boots dry in the drying cupboard, kingsize elevator bunkbed, even a shower! No point living in a carpet cave when you could live in a Scandinavian-log-cabin-on-wheels complete with deer antler coat hanger right?
This is my 3rd build and has been my home for the last 6 months. Its taken me all over the UK and has been completely problem free other than a couple of faulty exhaust sensors that have obviously been replaced.
The build took me 2.5 months. Mentally it took a lot more haha! I poured my heart and soul into this van and let my creativity take over. I ran wild with ideas of elevator beds, drying cupboards, pull up bars, ovens, deer antlers – the list goes on. As it was to be my full time home and leather workshop I intended for this to be my forever van through rain or shine, summer and winter. As a side product of my expanding leather business I’m now needing extra storage for all my rolls of leather, tools and my rapidly accumulating outdoor gear (inc electric all terrain longboard!). Apparently thats all the reason I need to make me embark on yet another crazy emotional van building journey!
The van has 2 kingsize beds:
Bed 1 is an elevator bed and has the option of being manual or if you’re feeling lazy (which is now most of the time!) automated using a specially adapted drill bit (a hook) and a battery operated drill. The bed was made with a modified garage storage solution that winches the bed to the ceiling, eliminating the annoying need to assemble and dissemble the bed every day whilst keeping the LARGE 5 PERSON SEATING AREA with a large adjustable, drop down, pivoting farmhouse table underneath.
Bed 2 is perfect for guests and is made by dropping the table down into the gap in the seating area. The cushions then pull together to form a bed.
FULL SIZE SMALL BATHROOM with an exposed copper pipe shower with hot or cold water. There’s a cassette toilet for when nature calls – ideally suited for all those camp sites requiring self containment.
THE BEST FEATURE of the bathroom is that it acts as a HEATED DRYING ROOM for all your wet clothes and boots. This was essential to me after living in my previous van and having to hang all my wet clothing from the ceiling – NOT COOL! I also use my wetsuit a lot, and do A LOT of hiking so inevitably my stuff gets wet. Putting clothing on that’s wet from the day before is no longer a part of my lifestyle, and it doesn’t need to be with yours either.
KITCHEN WITH FIXED GAS OVEN. Again, another essential item for me was the oven. I got sick of eating fried food all the time and wanted roast dinners back on the menu. The oven is truly an asset to be worshipped!
I also have a 45L Russel Hobbs fridge freezer. Big enough to store about 5 days worth of food for me, but I’m not a conservative eater and I eat A LOT of fresh veg that take up a lot of room! You
There’re also undermounted Kilner food jars to display all your finest grains and pastas – a massive space saver when you intend to live on the road!
Copper jam pan sink and a extendable faucet that can be used as an outdoor shower or to rinse off your gear.
THE BRAINS OF THE OPERATION consists of a 210AH battery powered by a split relay charger as well as 300watts of solar. After living in the van through winter, charging my E-board, laptop, phone, drone, wifi dongle, 300watt sound bar, diesel heater, water pump, fridge and the lights wasn’t an issue. I would upgrade and add an extra 300 of solar if i was gonna keep this van as I did have to turn on the van and run it on idle for half an hour every few days just for a bit of a boost. I have a 1500/3000 watt pure sinewave inverter that provides mains power to the fridge and 2 x 4 socket extensions that are mounted to the wall. 1 in the living room and 1 in the kitchen. The inverter can handle large loads up to 3000 watts so if you wanted to use a hairdryer or a blender you can.
Diesel night heater that has an auxiliary tank contained within 1 handy unit. 3 ducting tubes run to the living area to warm your toes and the 4th goes to the bathroom to dry your stuff.
Instant gas water heater does what it says on the tin.
7.5L butane/LPG gas canister provides gas for heating water and cooking.
75 litre water tank stores enough water to keep me hydrated and clean for about 2 weeks before needing to refill.
Electric water pump – NO MORE SQUEAKING FOOT PUMP! Honestly, I hate those things and feel sorry for anyone who opts for them. If you like waiting 30 minutes to pump out a glass of water, knock yourself out!
MASSES OF STORAGE (just not enough for me): tons of underseat storage throughout the living space, lit up by LED lighting and a HUGE above cab storage cupboard. 2 large ceiling mounted cupboards and 3 large kitchen cupboards, 1 of which houses the gas bottle and cleaning stuff, another all pots pans and food and the last one is for canned goods, saucy sauces and dried foods that cant fit in the Kilners.
OTHER COOL SH3T:
I hate having to stuff jackets, shoes and hats away so I built in a coat rack come book shelf next to the entry way. Above it is a real deer antler hat and accessory rack – honestly the most useful thing in the whole van! Gloves, hats, headtorches, compass, torch, scarves, socky socks, bracelets, towels ALL ended up swinging from those antlers at some point if not most of the time.
Shoe cupboard conveniently placed next to the door so you can quickly slam those stinky hiking boots away!
Rear mounted outdoor pull up/chin up bar. I like to keep strong, comes in useful! I also travel with my 2 25kg weights and barbell!
Custom copper pipe light – cool as! Real nice soft warm lighting makes it super cozy!
Custom treated copper backsplash – Absolutely love that thing! took a long time to make and will be sorely missed!
Bedside alcoves to store electronics while charging or books and drinks at night.
Skylight with bug mesh.
CHANGES MADE SINCE THE VIDEO:
I ripped out the parquet floor and replaced it with light oak laminate. The parquet was just to grotty and dark and has not been missed in the slightest!
New adjustable shoring bars to adjust the height of the bed and give extra security when driving.
THE VAN ITSELF:
Citroen Relay 2013 L4H3 (HEAVY SUSPENSION) – one of the largest vans on the market.
Runs perfectly, gear changes are nice and smooth.
~178000 miles (will check tomorrow and update if necessary!)
10 months MOT
Complete service history since owning the van (previous history unknown but my mechanic has told me its got a new turbo and brake calipres fitted).
Replaced the wiring loom 2 months back after faulty exhaust sensors fried several wires (details in history).
I’m sad to see such an amazing van go but its time to upgrade! I’d love to see the van go to someone who would use it regularly, it needs that fresh mountain air!
I plan on re-painting and carrying out other cosmetic work to bring it back to a NEW standard.
Give me a call, come view it, take it for a spin and you’ll love it!
Open to sensible offers.
HAPPY HUNTING! 😀
