Below we have summarised all the details of our van conversion.
Van base-
We first prepared the van by treating any rust and imperfections. This was followed by sound deadening and insulation which consists of dodo dead Matt, celotex and a space thermal blanket. This has very high thermal values and which we have personally tried and tested before. We then lined over the insulation with reflective vapour barrier to remove the possibility of any condensation build up. We have thermally insulated blinds for all the windows to minimise any heat loss. Finally the walls were lined with hard wood ply painted in a tough and durable Valspar paint allowing you to easily wipe away dirt.
Kitchen-
The kitchen has been lovingly crafted by hand and made from lightweight pine to create an eye catching and practical work space. A shaker style door painted in a mood changing shade of yellow to embellish the kitchen frontage and is mirrored throughout the conversion. We decided to use a marble effect compact laminate worktop because of its durability and clean look. There are ample amounts of space for cooking and all other daily needs. We have chosen to pair the tops with a simple black glass 2 burner hob supplied by camping gaz bottles which are located in the bottom left hand cupboard in a gas locker which holds 2 x bottles. On the opposite end of the kitchen counter we have a deep brushed steel sink which is perfect for everyday needs, paired with a black mixer tap and a stainless steel soap dispenser. The work space is well lit from 2 adjustable spotlights which run on their own dimmer switch. A 50L SMAD 12v fridge has been installed capable of holding all of your essentials.
Additional benefits:
Integrated waste bins
handmade Italian tiled splash-back
Good sized storage cupboards and drawer
Dining area/Single bed-
Opposite the kitchen we have designed a comfortable area which provides ample space for dining and can additionally used as single bed. This area is well lit by 2 opening bunk windows which create a cool breeze throughout the van. Under one of the seats we have installed an efficient 8kw self contained diesel heater which is perfectly capable of warming the van on a cold winters night. Also this where the gas boiler is stored (refer to shower description). The other seat has been left empty to provide a good amount of storage space. We have made a beautiful table top which has been burnt and varnished to create an earthy finish which accents other elements of the van. The table top is removable and lowers down to make the single bed or can be used down the sofa end of the van. Between the dining area and the sofa we have built a top to floor cupboard which holds most of our clothes with the capability of hanging, a full length mirror on the door has been installed and a compact chemical toilet is located at the bottom. In this cupboard you will also find the 12v amplifier which powers the surround sound system controlled via Bluetooth allowing you to play your music so you can always vibe on the road!
Shower-
At the end of the kitchen is where the Camplux gas boiler will be located when in use. We have installed an outlet water tap which is plumbed into the water pump and an outlet quick release gas hose to supply the boiler. Simply connect the boiler to these connections and you will have instant hot water for an outdoor shower (refer to pictures). Shower curtains are provided to give privacy which can be attached to the door hooks to create a screen.
Living area/Bed-
From our past experience we decided that functionality and comfort are two things we would not compromise on. Taking this into account we decided a pull out sofa was the way to go. This area is lit by 2 wall lights and we have also fitted an opening side door window and a Dometic roof vent to maximise the natural light. By doing this it maximises the views when sipping your morning coffee and it gives an open space to socialise. All the cushions in the van are made from memory foam and upholstered with faux suede removable covers. Not only is the sofa an amazing space to relax it also doubles as a pull out double bed capable of sleeping 2 tall adults and the possibility of one more underneath. Plenty of storage for bedding and possessions can be accessed from the hand crafted sliding doors beneath. On the bulk head wall you will also find a large over head cupboard which creates another large space for storage.
Water-
Opposite the sofa you will find the water storage compartment capable of holding 75L of fresh water. We have also installed a 90L waste water tank beneath the van which can be emptied by the tap at the skirt of the van. Equipment such as the shurflo water pump, shurflo filter and accumulator are found in the bottom of the sink cupboard.
Electrics-
We have installed an efficient electrical setup which is easy to use and minimal to maintain. The system has been designed with off grid travel its priority meaning you will very rarely need to connect to mains electricity. Perfect for anyone looking to hit the wilderness and escape modern day life. Below is a list of components and features used in the set up:
