Conversion Description:
Purchased and converted in 2022 (van registered late 2016) with one previous business owner (motorway miles only) and converted professionally by renowned Harpers Vans and Recreation https://www.instagram.com/vansandrecreation to a superb specification for off-grid family living.
The interior sleeps comfortably for two adults and two children on luxurious full UK double bed, custom cab sleeper mattress and garage sleeping configuration.
Conceived as a hybrid family / business vehicle, I am now selling as my business model has had to change due to ill health and I’m doing more work locally. As such, I’ve only been able to use it a handful of times since purchase unfortunately, such a shame as it’s a beautiful conversion and I sleep like a log in it!
Very easy to drive and the Wolfbox reversing camera makes this even easier. The vehicle was registered in late 2016 – when Crafter parts and Sprinter parts were largely identical, so it’s pretty future-proof.
ULEZ:
We made a point of buying a vehicle which was ULEZ compliant as we live in a city – and with legislation changing rapidly I wanted to be as clean/green as possible
All aboard The George Peter!
A magnificent 2022 build from Harper’s Vans and Recreation
The George Peter is a luxury, solar-powered, off-grid conversion of a 2016 medium wheelbase Volkswagen Crafter. Bathed in a custom azure blue, contrasting with the soft mustard and gold tones inside, this is a home for any season or landscape. This vehicle also has huge rental potential being easy to drive yet with up to five belted seats.
Climb in, take the captain’s seat and set your compass. The new chunky all-terrain tyres will easily tackle any road, dirt track or muddy festival park up!
The high-grade conversion and contents are brand new – from the wooden ceiling, storage solutions and ample kitchen on both sides – to the soft, restful fabrics and interior.
A five-strong crew can take their own seats in this four-berthed home. Too many seats? Fold two of them down and hide them, or remove them in seconds in the living space, but check for stowaways in the large storage units that become loungers!
For connectivity and power, the industry standard Victron Electrics solution is powerful and full of options, with an efficient wi-fi base-station and aerial that just works, even in The Scottish Highlands.
The six custom windows in the living space allow you to get the most from cloudy skies with extra light coming through the efficient Maxx Air Fan should you drive to hotter climbs.
This is a beautiful, warm, practical family home-on-wheels with a fully ULEZ compliant engine – a cleverly designed conversion allowing a family to live and holiday in style, while still fitting easily on a driveway. A perfect VanLife unit which could, for some, also be a semi-permanent home or with the internal wifi, be a workspace retreat.
Detail:
The main bed is over six feet long, made from firm memory foam for ultimate comfort (and we are picky), with two other sleep spaces – one in the cab on a specially commissioned folding mattress base, and one in the ‘garage’ section underneath the main bed, the frame of which was custom made by an ex-Rolls Royce craftsman.
We have a beautiful solid wood folding table as the centrepiece of the dining area, sitting on an industry standard sequoia leg system which is removed in seconds. The work surfaces are also solid wood, beautifully finished in linseed treatments and are flanked on both sides by imported sunny tiles in pastel yellows.
Mechanically, the 2016 engine is extremely reliable and easily passed its MOT with no advisories. We chose Harpers Vans and Recreation as they are no stranger to these pages and the engine and van condition was meticulously inspected by their own mechanics before purchase in 2022. It was useful to commission a conversion company with their own garage arm for peace of mind. But with a van that has only been under one professional company before we purchased it – which wasn’t sat idling, we knew that we would be joining the brilliant VW Crafter Community with the romance and reliability VW is known for.
One of the advantages of the 2016 year for these vans is that they are far less electrics and processing that the Crafters / Sprinters in the last five years have. This van is also compatible with Mercedes Sprinter 2016 for parts, so it’s pretty future proof in aftermarket products and spares.
The George Peter drives smoothly and quietly, but is responsive when you need it to be. These vans were chosen for ambulances for a reason! Known for their longevity and popularity in the van life community, Crafters and Sprinters have been known to drive for half a million miles!
When we said off-grid we really meant it. The van has over-generous solar power (500w) and high-grade Victron electrics installed by electrician and a large underslung gas tank with certification. The system automatically charges a large roamer battery from solar to engine-charge when driving. Full charge is achieved in only a few hours. If you arrive at a campsite, you can take solar power also.
The layout allows multiple configurations. Even with all beds in place there is still space to meet in the centre of the van on the soft box-benches. The front seats all revolve for a spacious dining room – or these seats can be curtained off for privacy while someone sleeps in the cab. And while it easily sleeps four, it’s not impossible to squeeze in five!
This is a cheap van to keep warm. The Truva heating system takes ten minutes to make it toasty. It has night settings to gently top up the temperature and lots of customisable options. It costs £15 to fill the large underslung tank and this provides enough gas to warm the van and cook for weeks. It is also very easy to fill at most large garages.
The fabrics and decor have been carefully chosen to add warmth. We live in Scotland and the more warmth the better. It was designed to reflect a sunset and every fabric is removable and washable.
There are four large overhead cupboards in a contrasting light blue with wipe-clean surfaces which match the drawers and cupboards below and where the fridge sits, which is, like all the products, brand new. The fridge will also switch between shore power and leisure battery automatically.
The George Peter has a three ringed gas hob for cooking, with lots of space for chopping vegetables and a powerful pump for the tap.
The kitchen tap pulls out enough for showering possibilities…you can simply mix yourself a container of warm water either using the kettle on the stove and transfer the water feed. Speaking of which two tanks are underneath the large sink and custom wooden cover.
We are parked just outside of Edinburgh and can pick you up from the train station or airport if you need to. We can also arrange zoom calls and answer any questions
Bed 1: The Biggie!
The bed set up in the van is fantastic. Basically, there are slats in the kitchen that enable a full sized (135cm x 200cm) double bed in a Medium Wheel Base. Half of the bed is on a custom metal bed frame (produced by ex-Rolls Royce craftsman) with the other continuing on the removable wooden slats. The bed is modular with a double thickness memory foam mattress, with a removable cover. Underbed storage accessible from inside the van and through back doors.
Bed 2: The Child / ‘Teen Nook’
Bed two can be in the garage space under bed one. There are a couple of ways to sleep this way. The first is the width way which is fine for a child – but if a third adult wanted to sleep underneath the double bed, this is possible in the kitchen space also. There is room for future customising in this way.
Bed 3: The ‘Cab Nook’
The final bed is a custom-made mattress which is solid but comfy and folds to form a cab-sleeping solution. It is possible to sleep an adult / teen under 6ft this way.
