FAQs
Can I wild camp in the Peak District?
Unlike Scotland, wild camping isn’t legally permitted in the Peak District without the landowner’s permission. However, there are several campsites that offer a ‘wild camping’ feel with basic facilities, such as Crowdecote Campsite, which provides the excitement of wild camping whilst ensuring you have access to essential amenities.
What’s the best time of year to visit the Peak District?
Each season offers something rather special in the Peaks. Spring brings lovely wildflowers and newborn lambs, whilst summer offers the longest days for hiking and exploring. Autumn treats you to spectacular colours, and winter transforms the landscape into a peaceful wonderland. However, do pack for all weather conditions, as British weather can be rather unpredictable!
Do I need to book campsites in advance?
During peak season (June-September) and bank holiday weekends, it’s highly recommended to book your pitch in advance. Many of our recommended sites, such as Farditch Farm and Beech Croft Farm, can be fully booked weeks ahead, especially for their hardstanding pitches.
Are there family-friendly campsites?
Sites like Beech Croft Farm and Barn Farm Campsite are brilliant for families, offering dedicated children’s play areas and activities. However, do note that some sites, such as Crowdecote Campsite, are adult-only for those seeking a quieter stay.
Is the Peak District suitable for first-time campervan users?
The Peak District is brilliant for novice campervanners! Many sites, such as Crowden Camping & Caravanning Club Site, offer hardstanding pitches and helpful staff. The roads are generally well-maintained, though do be mindful of some narrower country lanes.
What should I pack for a Peak District camping trip?
Beyond your usual camping gear, do bring:
- Walking boots and weatherproof clothing
- OS maps or a reliable navigation device
- Extra layers (the weather can change quite rapidly)
- Torch for those lovely evening walks to the local pub
- Camera for capturing those stunning Peak District views
Are there shops near the campsites?
Most campsites are within reasonable distance of villages or towns like Bakewell and Matlock, where you’ll find shops for essentials. However, it’s wise to bring basic supplies with you, especially if you’re staying at more remote sites like Upper Booth Farm Campsite.
