Extra Costs When Hiring A Campervan

Fuel –

If you hire a campervan from Quirky Campervans you will pick up your campervan with a full tank and will need to return it in the same way. Bear in mind that campervans are larger than your average car, this means they move slower, have larger tanks and cost more to fill up.

On average your fuel will cost 15-17 pence per mile for a standard campervan engine size (1401-2000cc), giving you a typical mileage of around 42 miles per gallon. This will vary depending on the size and fuel efficiency of your chosen campervan.

Campsites –

Campsites can vary hugely, from back to basic sites with little to no facilities. Often chosen for their quiet peaceful vibes. To massive Holiday Park sites with pools, kids play areas and onsite pubs and restaurants. How you choose to camp is entirely down to you and costs vary according to what’s on offer. Prices can also change according to the season in which you’re travelling.

Smaller Campsites/ Few Facilities – £20.00 – £30.00 per night

Mid Size Campsites/ Toilets & Showers included – £30.00 – £50.00 per night

Larger Campsites with luxury facilities/holiday parks – £50.00 – £100.00 per night

Check out our Campsites Guides for tried and tested campsites for every holiday!

Food –

All campervans on hire from Quirky Campers come with cooking facilities in the van. This can vary from a few hobs to full-sized kitchens and even some vans with air fryers! So no matter where you are cooking isn’t something you need to stress about. You can amend your food needs to your budget and work off anything from £10.00 – £60.00 per day. Factors that affect the cost will include eating out or cooking in, choosing budget supermarkets and planning ahead vs buying as you go. Don’t forget that the benefit of a campervan is that you can pull up and eat wherever you are, whether it’s a BBQ on the beach or a gourmet dinner cooked in your van oven!

Activities

How you like to spend your time will change the budget of your trip. There are plenty of free activities on offer with a campervan as your travel buddy, but if you like to change things up there’s also lots to do that can cost a bit. To keep an eye on your spending, why not create a budget of how much you’d like to spend each day or overall on activities? If you’re travelling by road you are likely to encounter toll roads. Either in the UK or outside of it. These should always be well signposted on the road as you drive onto it and information will be provided on the signage as to how to pay. Most of these are now paid online. You can use apps like Google Maps to select routes that avoid tolls however, if you are entering larger cities in the UK or Europe you are also likely to enter emission zones which may include charges for your vehicle. Toll costs can vary but usually are between £2.00-10.00, however, fines for not paying the tolls can reach the thousands. To avoid scary fees plan your route ahead and double-check whether you will be entering into any chargeable zones.

Insurance is included in your booking cost when you hire with Quirky Campers. the standard insurance comes with an excess of £1500.00 (Subject to the customer meeting standard criteria) £500.00 of this will be held on the customer’s card as a security deposit for the duration of the booking.

However, if you choose you can purchase additional excess cover. This is not purchased from Quirky Campers however we do recommend Questor:

UK and EU residents can opt to take out an excess reimbursement policy through our recommended third-party provider Questor enabling them to claim the excess back in the event of an accident minus £100.

We do recommend renters also take out their own travel insurance for that extra peace of mind.

  1. Follow the link – Questor Insurance
  2. Fill out the basic details and you will be given an instant price which you can then choose whether to purchase

Restrictions to be aware of:

How Many Passengers Will There Be?

No matter what your group size. Whether you’re travelling solo or with a family of 5 with dogs, there will be a campervan out there suitable for you. Most would assume the bigger the campervan, the higher the price, and whilst this isn’t always the case, it’s definitely something to factor in. Make sure you check the number of berths is suitable to your group size before booking. Discover Family-friendly vans here!

How much does fuel cost in a Campervan?

An additional cost that you will need to factor in is fuel. Most campervans will be given to you with a full tank of petrol, but you will also be expected to deliver it back with one in return and due to their big engines, the cost may be a little higher than you’re used to paying. For example, a ford transit 2.2 litre tank, running at around 30 MPG will cost you around 17p per mile. The easiest way to cut this cost is to spend less time on the actual road and more time parked up. Although, when comparing this cost to your average plane or train ticket, the cost of fuel for your trip is extremely competitive. And did you know? Here at Quirky, we offset any miles driven at no extra cost to you – you can visit our Ecologi forest here.

How much do activities cost on a campervan holiday?

If you plan to spend most of your days hiking, climbing, and generally exploring, then it’s unlikely you’ll need a big budget for activities. Campervan holidays often encourage you to spend more time outside in nature which is completely free! Think swimming in lakes, sunbathing on the beach with your favourite book or going for a run along a coastal path. However, if you’re looking to partake in excursions such as museum tours or extreme sports like rock climbing and wakeboarding, then you may need to set aside more spending money. It may be worth looking at specific activities you intend to do prior to the trip to get an accurate idea on costs.

Cooking in a campervan is a whole new and fun experience on its own. You’ll find parking up next to a mountain or beach will inspire you more to cook up a delicious dish to complement the view. There is also the option of finding cheap ways to eat out like a fish and chips van (which often tastes even better than the fancy restaurant you were considering!). We have listed a number of our favourite recipes and cooking equipment in a previous blog post – Cooking in a Campervan. If you’re on a budget, It may be helpful to plan your meals beforehand and stock up the cupboards with your own weekly shop.
