About the area: Emma-Jane is located in Bedford, just off the M1 at junction 13 in Bedfordshire. The location is very close to the countryside in all directions. Box End Park is 4.6 miles away with camping, a restaurant, water sports and a range of activities.
Description of Beds: Emma-Jane Sleeps 4 people in fixed beds. The double bed is 185 cm x 135 cm and has a very comfy memory foam mattress. The two singles (which can be changed to a double) are 75 cm x 190cm and are also memory foam. All beds have windows next to them which can open to allow air in, with mosquito window mesh fitted. All beds will fit adults (the lower bed may be a little snug for anyone over 5’11”), however, the upper beds can be a little close to the ceiling and were designed for children.
Description of Seating: Emma-Jane has 5 forward facing, belted seats. All seats can fit child car seats, have headrests and standard 3-point seatbelts. The rear two seats have Isofix points. The three seats in the front all spin to face the rear two seats with a full-width table to give a spacious seating and eating area. The table can also split allowing for flexibility. The rear seats can be removed individually if necessary to give more room.
Description of Electrical Setup: Emma-Jane is fitted with a high-specification Victron electrical system designed to be off-grid with no need to be plugged into the mains (Although a mains plugin is provided if required). 375W solar panels on the roof keep the 110Ah LiPO battery topped up and the battery-to-battery smart charger will support that when the engine is running. There are plenty of USB, 12V and 240V sockets and plugs around the van. The 2500W inverter/charger can support the van’s Nespresso coffee machine, a milk frother or even a hair dryer.
Parking: There is no parking but there is space to stop, load and unload all your bags at the handover and free parking is available a few streets away. More details can be provided on booking. Also a free pick-up is available if coming into Bedford on the train.
Cooking Equipment: The van is equipped with a single very powerful gas hob and a gas cooker/grill. There is also a large 85-litre electric compressor fridge freezer to keep things chilled and frozen. The kitchen includes all the essentials for eating, drinking and cooking which includes a whistling kettle, tumblers, plates, bowls, cutlery, a frying pan, saucepan, plenty of cooking utensils, chopping knife and board, colander and of course a bottle opener and corkscrew. There is also a Nespresso coffee machine (for standard capsules, a few are provided) and a milk frother.
Water and Sanitation: The 90-litre water tank holds plenty of fresh water with a water filter on the kitchen tap (although the tank should be filled from drinkable water sources at all times). There is a hosepipe and adaptor for filling the tank if required. A gauge inside shows the water level. The waste water tank is 60 litres and can be drained easily at many suitable locations using a switch inside the van. The inside shower and toilet have a heated towel rail which will dry towels and clothes quickly when the heater is on. The shower has both a large rain head and a detachable showerhead. There is also an outside shower for washing dogs, bikes, children, and even the messiest adults too. The toilet is a compost toilet which separates the waste to reduce odours and has a small fan to help. The toilet must be removed at the end of rental (easy to remove) to be washed down and cleaned. There is also an extractor fan on the bathroom roof to remove steam.
Audio Equipment: The van has the standard head unit with slightly better quality speakers in the front. There is a USB connection to the radio so you can play your own music from your phone/Spotify and it allows hands-free calling. There is a rechargeable Bluetooth speaker provided in the rear for relaxed evenings.
Type of Heating: The van has a Truma 6e combi boiler which warms the van up to a high temperature very quickly through vents in the front and back of the van. The boiler also provides hot water for the sink and inside or outside showers. The boiler is a gas boiler and the LPG tank is underslung and refillable at service station LPG points. The gas also supplies the gas hob and gas oven and grill.
Pet Information: Emma-Jane is pet friendly the only restriction is no pets on the beds.
Conversion Story: The van was purchased from a recycling company which stopped trading during the lockdown. The conversion was completed to a high specification for the purpose of family off-grid camping away from the bustle of busy campsites. The brief for conversion was for 4 fixed beds, 5 belted seats, toilet and shower facilities and enough electricity to power the Nespresso machine.
