About the area: Harold is located in Aldershot on a private drive. We are on the edge of the Surrey hills for quick stopovers but also perfectly located to hit the road and be in the New Forest or the Cotswolds in just over an hour. We’re only 25 mins from J10 or J12 of the M25 so easily accessible for pick-ups. We are a 20-minute walk from the local station, or a short taxi ride, as well as being easily accessible from the M3 and A3. You are welcome to leave your car in Harold’s parking space. We are happy to discuss local pick-up or drop-off options, but please ask prior to booking.
Description of Beds: Harold sleeps two adults and two children. The adult bed extends to a length of 2m, primarily to fit its very tall owner and has a sprung and memory foam mattress. Shorter people can sleep sideways by tucking their feet under one of the bunks and saving a bit of floor space. The bed is about the width of a full double. There are two children's bunks, both with netting to stop little ones rolling out. The longest is 170cm long and the other is 155cm long. They therefore suit children between 10 and 7 years old. Both have been tested with small adults and can take the weight, but it's very snug. We provide mattress protectors as standard, bedding is an add-on
Description of Seating: There are two belted seats in the front cab, which swivel to make a dining area, plus two belted seats in the rear with ISOfix points. The backs of these fold down to give a bit more space when moving around the living space. We usually find that our child seats tuck away in the front of the cab when we are in ‘camping mode’.
Description of Electrical Setup: Harold has a full 12v and 240v electrical system. There is a 230Ah leisure battery that allows for off-grid running of the lights, fridge and USB sockets around the van. A 2000W inverter is connected to the battery which gives you four 240v (3pin) sockets. We use these to run the toaster, electric kettle or other items, when off-grid. Harold also has a 240v hook-up in the rear, so you can connect to any mains power source (we have adapters for campsites and normal household sockets). With this plugged in you can run anything for as long as you want, with four sockets for use. We have installed dedicated sockets for this hook-up so you know you are not going to drain the leisure battery. The leisure battery has three charging sources; the 200W of solar on the roof, when you are driving the van, and when you are using the mains hook-up. During the summer we find the sun and a bit of driving every couple of days gives us more electricity than we need.
Parking: You are welcome to park your car in Harold's parking space on our drive.
Kitchen Facilities: Harold’s kitchen has a sink, a 65-litre fridge/freezer and a two-burner gas hob. We also have a toaster, electric kettle and an air fryer. The sink runs off an under-sink water supply, with two 16L fresh water containers. There is a manual foot pump which works the tap in the sink, this is both a good workout for your leg, but also ensures you can get water even if you run out of power. There is a 16L grey waste tank under the sink as well. All tanks are removed from the van and filled/emptied outside. The gas hob is perfect for off-grid cooking and using the gas kettle, it's fast and easy to use. The toaster, electric kettle and air fryer are better for when you know you have loads of electricity available. We provide a range of pans, crockery, cutlery and utensils for a family of four to use
We also provide an outdoor gas hob for £5.00, we ask that you bring your own camping gas canister for this as they do get used up quickly but are readily available from camping shops.
Bathroom Facilities: Harold has a chemical toilet hidden under the bench seating (please select as an add-on if you want to use it). It's ideal for families who are comfortable with open-plan facilities! It’s large enough to last several days of full family use, but if you are out most of the day, just using it for emergencies and night time, then it will last well over a week. The toilet will be set up ready to use, but it is your responsibility to empty and clean it at the end of your rental, using the chemicals we provide. We do include a USB/battery-powered shower, for use outside. One end simply drops into a jug of warm water and squirts it out of the shower head.
Audio Equipment: We have a small Bluetooth speaker to use when you are in the living area. The cab has a built-in stereo for use while driving, with CD, Bluetooth and Sat Nav.
Type of Heating: Harold has a diesel heater which warms the van very quickly. There is a dedicated diesel fuel tank so you won’t get stranded by using the diesel the van engine needs. This comes with a remote so you can turn it on and off from wherever you are in the van. We can also provide a small electric heater if you think you will be plugged into the mains most of the time, this is quieter and likely cheaper to run. Some campsites don’t allow this so worth checking with them in advance.
Pet Information: No pets please, we have allergies in the family.
Conversion Story:Harold was self-converted in 2024, using evenings and weekends around a hectic family life. We couldn’t find a van to buy that had the layout that we wanted for our family. We prioritised an adult bed that would sleep a 6ft5 dad as well as mum, plus two separate bunks so each child had their own space. The rest of the design was built out from there. We created a comfy dining and living space with cab seats that rotate and a table that can be swivelled, raised, lowered, or simply removed. It takes less than 2 minutes to go from driving mode to living mode. The ISOfix rear seats are from a Ford Galaxy and were customised and installed by a professional van fitter, to ensure they were securely bolted to the van and gave us space for electronics beneath.
Extra Information: We’ve insulated the floors, walls and ceilings, and installed two ceiling vents (one with remote control) for air movement and light. We think we have future-proofed the electronics needs of growing children with a big enough battery and plenty of USB sockets. After we finished the build, we spent 6 weeks travelling around Europe as a family, which created memories of a lifetime but also a list of improvements we wanted to make to the van. We have since extended the kitchen and made a dedicated bin area, to ensure that daily living in the van is easier. The addition of a heater for our annual Christmas family tour has extended the usability of the van all year round.
