Rothley Low Lake (Wild With Consent)

Overview
Scots Gap, Northumberland
Grace Fell

A truly historic spot: this site overlooks Rothley Low Lake, a lake originally designed and landscaped by the famous gardener Capability Brown in the 1770’s. It is one of the few examples of his work in the North East which he completed in his lifetime. The lake is designed in his classical ‘Serpentine Style’, and stocked full of rainbow trout: ask ahead if you are interested in fishing.

Come and relax in this magnificent landscape, with walks around the lake and over to Rothley Castle. Trees have recently been planted in the place where Capability Brown had indicated on his drawings to complete the landscape.

The listed National Trust houses at Wallington and Cragside, and the Ox Pub – which has recently made headlines for its innovative gastronomic experiences – are all within easy striking range. The hosts can also provide you with fresh eggs and honey from the farm for breakfast, or drop into their traditional village bakery, Greenwell Bakery, on your way through Rothbury.

Access is along a grass track, parking on grass.
