We commissioned this van in 2023 as our dream build; a vehicle that is compact and economical enough to use as an everyday vehicle (it returns 40+ mpg), yet also provides a comfortable off-grid living space for working and extended travel. We’re unexpectedly starting a new chapter in life very soon and as such we are now looking to rehome our van. This is not your average panel van-based camper van. This Fiat Talento was converted in 2023 and has been designed for travelling off-grid with extra features including blown air heating, an Autogas 2000 underfloor 20L LPG system (do you really want to spend your holiday hunting down gas cylinder refills?), a very high specification fast-charging electrical system with an ultra-thin roof mounted solar panel and 100 litres of water storage capacity. A removable roof mounted Kodak smart pocket projector (Android operating system with built-in VPN, YouTube, Netflix, Amazon apps etc.) with 40″ screen provides the evening entertainment. A quick lesson in van electrical systems: Most van conversions typically use a cheap 95Ah AGM leisure battery with a safe discharge rate of 50% and therefore capable of running the small Dometic fridge (which requires ~40Ah per day) for 24 hrs before requiring an electrical hook up. On a typical system with decent wiring the split charge system will run at ~10A (often less), so to put 95Ah back into the batteries is going to take 8 to 9 hours driving. The electrical system on this Fiat Talento uses a 120Ah lithium battery with a safe discharge rate of 100% combined with a 40A battery to battery fast charger. This would take 3 hours of driving to charge (40A x 3hours = 120Ah). However, it is also fitted with a 100W solar panel, typically generating a minimum of ~40Ah per day. What this means in reality is that you can run the fridge indefinitely, in addition to generating enough power to run the water pump, lights, laptops, phone chargers and the projector.
