Bedford TK
This is a stunning one off camper suitable for a family of 4/5. We bought and renovated/converted her 10 years ago and have had many amazing adventures in her. Our girls are now too grown up for camping with us, and so we are sadly downsizing. She is a 7.5 ton lorry, so if you passed your test before Jan 1997 you don’t need a different licence. If you passed after that, you will need to get a C1 licence.
She has a massive king-size memory foam pull out bed above the cab which simply slides back during the day. There is also a full size bunk bed set up, with the lower bunk converting into seating for 4 with a table. The kitchen is huge and there is a full size under counter fridge and tons of storage. There is also a double gas camping hob and sink with foot pumped water. There are two seating areas, one of which has seat belts and the other a small child could sleep on, or we use for day lounging. Both ramp doors at the side and rear fold down and create a beautiful space to hang out in. We had a bespoke full length awning made last year which is amazing when it’s too hot to sit in the sun or when the weather is patchy you can have the side door down under the awning and still have an outside dry dining/cooking area. There is space for 5 bikes on racks, hung on the rear externally and mountings for a kayak and surfboard on the side. We also store the awning poles here too. There is storage under the van for tents, chairs and levelling ramps.
She has a 10-month MOT and is mechanically solid. The Bedford TK was used by the MOD due to its reliability, and as such there are lots of spares still around. We use a company called Midland auto parts which are specialists in Bedford TK’s. Over the ten years we have been using her she has had a new carb, refurbished gear box, electronic ignition system and a new distributor. She has a petrol engine and is a heavy vehicle but we find the cost of fuel isn’t so bad when you consider what you get back in amazing accommodation.
We have used her for festivals, weekends away and month long holidays in France, we have taken her as far the Loire Valley. She is often used by visiting guests on our drive. We also rented her out in the summer months for £800 a week or £450 for half a week, several years ago. We would drive her to a local campsite for this. She would get more now!
She cruises at about 55-60mph on the flat and is quite slow up hills, but you soon get used to a slower pace of life when travelling in her. Wherever you go you will get a LOT of attention, which is great for making friends on your travels. She has just had all the wood sanded and oiled and has been completely repainted, so she is looking at her very best ready for the summer! P.S. Her name is Gertrude or Gerty to family.
This is registered as a horse box with accommodation. You can still get a horse in it up the side ramp, so it stays as a horse box with accommodation on the MOT.
