Matilda is a very high spec van. I bought it from a conversion specialist 2 years ago and have used it on many trips around the UK and Europe. It has been built for off-grid camping and is totally self sufficient – all it needs is occasional access to a tap to fill and drain the water system & toilet. The solar and battery system provides more than enough power for the fridge, lights, laptops, hair dryers, and anything else that you want to plug in. I even brought an 230V air conditioner with me on a recent trip to the Alps.
I am currently buying a house so sadly she is looking for a new owner.
LAYOUT:
Matilda has a fixed bed at the back of the van which runs the full width. The bed is a standard UK double mattress (190cm x 135cm)
Currently there is an Emma memory foam mattress on the bed (included in the sale). This is extremely comfortable 25cm thick mattress.
The “garage” space under the bed provides ample storage for mountain bikes, paddle boards, tools, chairs and so on.
The side door gives access to the living space, across from the door is a large opening double-glassed camper windows above a table which can fold down if needed and a bench with cushions. The drivers chair swivels around to face the table. The electrical, heating & water systems are located under the bench and under the floor beneath the table.
Behind the bench is the toilet and shower room which has a door and separate shower curtain. Between the shower and the bed there are storage cubbies.
The kitchen area is opposite the shower, with a large worktop with a large fridge, sink and double hobs.
There is a control panel above the sink for the electronics and lighting,
KITCHEN:
– 90l 230v fridge with 8l freezer
– Large kitchen sink
– Kitchen rail with hanging dish rack, hooks and pots
– Double gas hobs
– Large worktop space
– Large cupboard under sink
– Large cupboard with shelves under hobs
WATER:
Lockable water inside on the side of the van which feeds a 100l water tank located at the side of the garage above the wheel arches.
The water pump, filter, accumulator and most of the plumbing is located under the van – these are insulated and wrapped with 12v trace wire so that in the winter they do not freeze.
Hot water is handled by the Propex Malaga 5 LPG powered heater which has a 12l hot water tank. This gets hot in about 10-15minutes and provided easily enough hot water for good hot shower.
The kitchen sink also has a hot/cold mixer and detachable head which makes it easy to wash dishes.
Both the the sink and the shower drain to a 50l underslung waste water tank.
– Lockable water inlet
– 100L internal fresh water tank
– 12L LPG water heater – Propex Malaga 5
– Internal hot shower
– 50L underslung grey water tank
– Fresh water filter
– 12v Shurflo Pump
– Kitchen sink with detachable mixer head
– 12v heating and insulation on all external piping
– Thetford flushable cassette toilet
ELECTRICS:
Matilda has a combination of 200ah AGM + 280ah LiFePO4 batteries which can be used together or independently. This provides a massive amount of storage. I can explain this setup in more detail if needed, especially around the decision to keep both AGM and LiFePO4 batteries together.
The lithium batteries are rated for >3000cycles and they have done less than 40 to date.
There is a heater around the lithium battery so that it can be used when temperatures are below freezing (LiFePO4 batteries should not charge at low temperature)
The massive 3000w inverter powers the 230V 90l fridge/freezer, note the inverter can handle 6000w peak, the inverter also powers 3 sets of double sockets around the van and a single socket under the table.
The 4G modem is a Teltonika RUT950 with a high gain external antenna mounted on the roof. This gives the van good coverage and provides faster internet then the smaller antennas in your phone. It can also be used to pick up wifi hotspots.
The CCTV system records all 4 cameras to a hard drive PVR connected to the TV – this provides piece of mind when leaving the van as well as allowing you to see the surroundings of the van safely from within.
– 280ah 12v Lithium Iron Phosphate battery
– 200ah 12v AGM battery
– Daly 200A BMS to protect Lithium battery from over/under voltage or charging at low temperature
– Thermostatic heater for Lithium Battery
– Epever 60A MPPT charge controller
– 700w solar panels on roof (2 x 350w)
– Renogy 50A DC-DC charger (charges leisure battery from alternator)
– Green Cell 3000w pure sine inverter
– 230V hookup
– Multiple 230V & USB sockets around the van
– 4G Wifi modem with high gain antenna on roof
– CCTV with 4 colour + night vision cameras and hard-drive PVR
STORAGE & SECURITY:
The external door locks have been fitted with metal plates to stop theives from braking the locks (this is a must have for Fiat Ducatos, Citroen relays or Peugeot Boxers)
Under the bed there is an electronic laptop safe (with a backup key) – this is securely bolted to the side of the van and can only be removed from within.
There is storage space above the cab – this is where the 4g modem and CCTV PVR also live. I added some insulation above this storage space
The garage offers large storage space as already mentioned – there is also some shelves at the side of the garage for tool storage.
COMMENTS:
I am sure there are a few features that I have missed – the van really has to be seen to be appreciated. Please contact me if you have any questions or to arrange a viewing.
I have loved owning this van for the last 2 years – I had not planned to sell it but since living in London it does not get used enough and I need the money for a house deposit.
The van itself is in great condition – there are some marks to the bodywork which you can see in the pictures.
Matilda has a fresh MOT (23rd August) and a full service history.
Last service was in August 2022, 2000 miles ago.
For test drives insurance will need to be provided.
Sleeps 2 in a full size fixed double bed
The bed comes with a 25cm double “Emma” memory foam mattress with is extremely comfortable (cost ยฃ400)
There is lighting around the bed and a double 230v socket with usb ports.
