Say hello to a brand new off-grid conversion on a brilliant Mercedes base van
It’s a hand-built conversion and the fragrance of freshly cut timber still lingers
The layout was considered for a while and actually changed mid-build to eventually settle on the current one which emphasises the seating area/view rather than allowing the kitchen area to dominate. The kitchen pod is positioned on the sliding door side so in the summer you can cook with the door open and enjoy the outside.
The seating is in an L-shape, with main seating area is under the window with a removable hardwood table for work/dining/drinks. Tailored made-to-measure bench cushions (earthy/fossil colour) cover the seats.
The night heater is under the seat and controlled by a panel in the cab area for ignition – it’s set up more for heating up the van and then turning off. There’s storage in two of the three box seats and in the locker above the table (and also above the cab). The box seat closest to the cab houses the Alpicool 12v 45litre chest fridge which can be left on day and night via the battery/solar set up.
The kitchen area consists of 2-ring black glass domino hob, small but deep sink with cold water supply (via 23litre Fiamma wheely tank which is anti-certain things that are great for keeping the water and tank clean). There’s some useful storage bits on the kitchen wall and also more storage inside the kitchen pod with protective leads to stop things coming out when driving.
Electronics are powered by a large 140a/h Varta battery which is charged by a huge 420watt solar panel and 40amp Renogy Solar charge controller (and split charge relay for charging through the vehicle’s engine). There’s two USB charge point locations each with two slots, two touch dimmable LED spotlights, a LED lighting area under the bed and a water pump on/off switch. For 230v power (laptops etc) there’s a Renogy 1000watt remote control Inverter and 4-way plug extension.
Under the double bed, there is quite a wide channel that could easily host a roll out single mattress for guest/third person or carry large items such as boards and bikes.
There’s a large white Venetian type blind between cab and rear, which needs to be rolled up when driving; I’ve also left all the components in the van to set up a throw blind system instead, the same at the back doors.
Insulation is triple layered in most places: sound insulation, 80mm of insulation wool and finished with a thermal foil as condensation barrier. Spruce cladding finishes the insulation and gives it a Nordic aesthetic. It’s either painted white or clear varnished apart from the bed area which is sanded wood. There’s also some hardwood/reclaimed wood touches here and there.
Summary:
420watt solar panel & 40amp Renogy Controller
Split charge relay
Eberspacher Night Heater
140a/h Varta Battery
Standard width double bed (135cm) with slightly reduced length to 182cm
Plenty of storage
Chest fridge/freezer
Room for single guest bed
The conversion is brand new and never been used – all components are new except for the Eberspacher night heater and sliding door window, both of which were previously fitted.
More about the base van…
I purchased this vehicle in July to convert into the camper for sale today
It was originally a welfare vehicle (from factory I believe) so as standard had a few modifications added by Mercedes which include an Eberspacher diesel heater in the rear, a reversing camera, a half window (tinted) added to the sliding door, a stronger rear bumper step with tow bar and also the vehicle has been lifted up onto higher suspension and a speed limiter added which is set at 80mph (so no speeding tickets hopefully).
I chose to buy it for conversion due to the features above, but also because it had low mileage for a Sprinter and looked great. I have sorted out a full filter and fluids service for buyer’s peace of mind along with a new exhaust manifold system last month at a total of £1100 – receipt in glovebox.
The van drives well and I understand why Sprinters are so desirable. The cab is well insulated and quiet and the build quality is very high. The drive is smooth and it has good speed without making a fuss and needing to rev high like a Ford Transit. Gearbox and clutch healthy. Comes with 4x silver Mercedes hubcaps for a different look. Full bluetooth radio with video screen / hands free etc and lots of other tech in the cab. There are many detailed manuals in the glovebox to help the new owner.
Bodywork is good for a Sprinter, but it’s not perfect and there are blemishes, marks and scratches here and there to be expected as always. Overall though it shines up well and it’s the best colour for a Sprinter.
Price has been dropped by 6k due to being out of season – I am at my bottom price now.
