With extreme reluctance I need to part with “Nest” after this short time due to an unexpected and necessary house move and associated costs.
The conversion was brand new when I bought it and has only been used for day trips so far (never slept in}—so effectively it is just as I bought it. Meanwhile she is keeping warm and dry in the garage waiting for her new owner !
“Nest” is a cosy, flexible little camper/day van that is packed with features. The use of Oak, Pine and Elm gives a homely cabin feel which is contrasted with the multicoloured upholstery (removable and washable ) and copper details.
With 3 belted seats up front and loads of room to sleep 2, “Nest” is perfect for weekend or longer getaways and adventures.
The base van is a solid and dependable VW T4 from 2003—the final year of manufacture for these brilliant vehicles.
The mileage is super low at 95100 and the mechanicals are excellent.
The T4 is a little shorter than a T5 or T6 and so is super easy to park in a normal parking bay.
“Nadanook” used this van as their own day use van before converting it and spared no expense on servicing and maintenance including 3 full services in the last 18 months, new Mintex brake discs, pads and hoses all round—as well as a new set of chunky BF Goodrich K02 All Terain Tyres.
“Nest” was also given a full Upol Raptor respray in “Freisen Green” which is an original VW colour.
As one of the last T4s–this will surely become a classic.
Full strip down, clean and Dodo Mat Thermo Liner Pro 10mm on all floor, walls, door and ceiling panels. This product gives incredible sound deadening and insulation, instantly transforming the van into a quiet and fully insulated living space. Even the cab was insulated this way, making the van a pleasure to drive.
Ribbed auto carpet in a retro chestnut colour , paired with Osmo stained lightweight timber cladding give a real ‘cabin in the woods’ vibe. The lower benches have been painted with 100% VOC free Little Knights paint in a cool ‘Almond Latte’ to compliment the wood tones.
A hard wearing LVT oak flooring, bespoke timber details and matt black touch LED spotlights, round off the living space.
The layout of ‘Nest’ is a reverse L-shaped bench directly behind the driver and passenger seats giving comfortable seating for up to four.
The Lagun table offers a multitude of positions for the beautiful solid Elm tabletop. The spaces under the bench seats house the Renogy electrical system, the Alpicool fridge/coolbox and the brand new and unused Thetford Porta Potti. The remaining under bench space offers extra storage.
The gorgeous multi colour upholstery is a block print in a durable fabric , with a medium/firm foam bench cushion. Covers are removable and washable.
For bedtime, a couple of extra bench tops fill in and together with the back cushions create a King Size bed (150cm x 190cm long). This setup gives an epic view from the foot of the bed every day. (note in the photos of the bed set up, I have not removed the table or table leg. These are super easy to unlock and store away giving a full King Size bed)
The kitchen in Nest is built across the rear tailgate–cleverly offering access from both inside the van and from a standing position under the tailgate. The space is dominated by the stunning live edge solid elm worktop-along with the unique hand hammered copper sink and copper tap. Adjacent is the control panel for the invertor, diesel heater, water pump and also charging points and twin 240v sockets. Underneath the worktop is a pull out oak shelf and a drawer which stores the induction hob. Further storage for food/dry goods is found underneath, together with a dedicated space for 2 x 13L water containers complete with12v pump to the tap.
The flip top 35L Alpicool CF35 coolbox lives in a dedicated under bench compartment just inside the sliding door for easy access. Also, is needed, the coolbox can be lifted out and moved to the rear kitchen area or even to the beach!
The brand new Induction hob is the excellent Vango Sizzle Twin. This unit can runvery happily from the 2000W Renogy Invertor, coupled with the 200Ah Lithium Battery Bank. No need for LPG!
Heating is supplied by the MV Airo 2Kw Diesel Heater underneath the driver’s seat. This is connected to the van’s main tank, so there is effectively unlimited amount of run time for the heater.
The electricals that Alistair from Nadanook has fitted are top notch. Renogy components + 2000Ah of Lithium giving a fully off grid system that will power everything in a van for at least 5 days without a charge. Even so, the 200W Flexi solar panel + DC-DC charger will ensure the battery bank is always topped up. Theres is always the mains hook up if ever needed as a backup.
The 2000w invertor powers 2 x 230v outlets, so you can cook on the Vango Sizzle and use a kettle or coffee machine etc. Quick charge USB outlets are also provided along with standard 12v outlets. The Renogy R1 touchscreen + Renogy App give you complete control over the system.
The driving cab in Nest is standard with the original “Inca” print on the Captains driver seat with armrests and the double bench seat—giving 3 belted seats.
A great upgrade to the cab is the excellent Sony AX8150 unit with 9″ touchscreen—giving you Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, DAB radio and much more. There is an input for a reversing camera if desired.
The speakers have been upgraded too with new Sony dask components and larger 6×9 speakers. You now have Sat Nav, Spotify and WhatsApp/Facebook/SMS on the move.
So with low miles, great mechanicals and a full Raptor respray on the outside-coupled with the beautiful handmade interior + high spec/off grid electricals, Nest is a one of a king day van/camper ready for adventures.
