Volkswagan Transporter Highline 140 manual
Sadly, the time has come to sell my VW Transporter T5.1 Highline 2.0 tdi 140 converted by Back2Back campers in June 2022. Following a long search, the van was purchased in 2021 from Its original owner. I was looking for the T5 due to its reliability and build quality over the T6. I also really wanted the rare lifting tailgate option. It is the Highline model which means it has air conditioning and cruise control, both of which are essentials for long journeys in the sun.
In addition, as the owner bought it from new, he specified the following extras
โข Captainโs chair with two armrests โ This seat is a revelation over the standard VW seat and is super comfy
โข Lifting tailgate โ This makes a great awning when it is raining and can be used for an external shower
โข Electric folding wing mirrors โ Ideal for getting through tight spots
โข Paint protection โ This has kept the paint in great condition.
โข Side bars โ To give the โSwamperโ look.
The layout of the van is unique, it was designed with the brief of being used for weekend trips to the sea. It has the usual campervan features:
Custom Back2Back bed, Just Kampers fridge, 10L water system, Leisure battery, Split charging system, voltage display, super thin 400w Solar panel for stealth camping, Camperglass window, a 240 hookup with 2 x 240 plug sockets, USB, lights and thermal curtain.
Plus the following:
โข Kiravan double swivel passenger seat – without these the van can be a bit cramped, there is now space to seat four adults when it raining
โข Locker with waterproof lining, which has a drain which means it can be used for a wetsuit or clothes
โข Space for surfboard to be attached inside the van โ this is super secure when staying โStealthโ
โข Primus Tupike stove โ it is much more practical in most situations to cook with stove next to the side door on the folding table or outside the van
This highly practical layout is great both for weekends away and longer stays.
The van was finished off last year with a set of Black Rhino wheels and BR Goodrich tyres, which have done less than 10,000 miles, these cost over ยฃ1,800 alone.
A change to my job forces a very reluctant sale.
The conversion was a custom 1 off design that built by back2back campers, it was designed as a more practical layout to the more common standard VW one. Stealth camping was also a big factor in this build, as I also wanted to be able to sleep in places without anyone knowing. They used a 4mm solar panel that is barely visible from outside the van. It was constructed using premium materials including xxx insulation, oak faced ply and premium components. The wetsuit locker is lined in PVC so is completely waterproof and even has a socket for a wetsuit drying hanger. An electric sink with 10L of water is also fitted. It has with 4 USB ports in the back and 1 cigarette lighter outlet. The fridge is a just Kampers fridge, which has plenty of room for several days provisions. The double swivel seat was purchased new from Kiravans, and adds lots of extra room when having multiple people inside the van, along with the extra storage under the seat. With comfort being an important factor, a 2-layer memory foam custom mattress was specified. Overall, it is the best Transporter layout Iโve seen, and by far the most practical for van life in a Transporter.
A Back2Back custom slide out double bed that comfortably fits 2 adults, during the day this converts back into a sofa, with two generous storage cupboards underneath.
